What it can do, and what it can’t do.
Plenty of software promises to take care of “all your documents”. Here is the exact list. And just below it, the twelve things Trievo cannot do. Better you know before you buy.

What “recognise” means here
Trievo sees what the document is — an electricity bill, a payslip — with the date, the name of whoever sent it and, if there is one, the person or company concerned. It does not read the amounts line by line, it works nothing out and it fills in no forms. This is not accounting software. It is filing software.
The twelve things it can’t do
They are written as they stand on the day it goes on sale. If one of them goes away, this page changes.
- Handwriting is only partly read.What is added in pen on a document — “paid on 18 March”, a cheque number, a signed approval — does get picked up: the image is sharpened to bring out the strokes. A letter written by hand all the way through, in joined-up writing, is only partly read.
- On a scanned page it reads three languages at a time, not twenty-four.All twenty-four languages are installed. But it loads only three at a time: any more and reading slows down without getting any more right. By default, your language and English. Files whose text is already there — most PDFs — are read in all 24 languages, with nothing to set.
- It stops after 25 seconds on a scanned page.It keeps what it has read rather than blocking the software. So a scan of a hundred pages will not be read right through.
- It does not open files with a password on them.It sets them aside. It never tries to force them.
- Photos, videos and sound files are filed by date, not by what is in them.Trievo does not know what is in a photo. Scanned documents and screenshots are read on their own; photos taken with a camera are read only if you ask.
- It does not go and fetch your e-mails.E-mails you have saved as a file (.eml or .msg) are handled. An Outlook or Gmail mailbox online is not.
- It touches nothing outside the folders you show it.It syncs nothing and it backs up nothing. If your disk breaks, Trievo can do nothing about it: backing up stays your job.
- It is not a legal safe.Trievo files your documents. It gives them no certified date and no weight in front of a court, in the sense of the NF Z42-013 filing standard.
- Windows 10 and 11 only.There is nothing yet for Mac or for Linux. Buying today gives you no right to a version on another system later.
- The software itself is in English and French.It recognises documents in the 24 languages of Europe, but its menus and our answers to your questions stay in these two.
- The purchase code can be got round.It is checked without the internet, so all it takes to check it sits inside the software: someone set on it will get round it. No protection that works without the internet does better, and telling you otherwise would be a lie.
- It never deletes anything, not even duplicates.That is on purpose: it points them out, you decide. If you were hoping for an automatic clear-out, this is not the software.
